Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod – whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques – I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. All I have is a fly rod with reel hemos ,streams,some wet and drys , gink , small around the neck fly box , nippers ,shades , hook sharpener ,net and muck boots carry it in a tube with a pouch on it

I love my streemer. If I’m unsure what to cast I aways throw a streemer. I got a 14" small mouth bass yesterday in about 2½ feet of water
ya do not need to buy all that just to start. the learning curve is only complicated with all that gear

I’m just learning to fly fish. Unfortunately I have balance problems (from cancer treatment) which can make it hard for me to go into a stream. Anyone have any suggestions on what I need to fish from the shore or just a little ways into the water? I’ve tried wearing waders but they’re just a little to heavy for me. Maybe someone knows of a lighter brand?

Dan, excellent video as always ! As long as you’re including lip balm and sunscreen, I emphatically recommend bringing a small quantity of TP in a sealed sandwich bag. Leaves just don’t cut it for me ! 😂🙃 Looking forward to seeing your leader and tippet selection video, as I am reminded watching your selection here that there is more than one way to skin the cat…

Don’t forget a Ziploc sandwich bag with some toilet paper in it. It doesn’t take up much space but man, it’s nice to have when you need it. 🙂 And great video BTW. Your transitions to and from your b-roll looks great!
You don’t need all that damn tippet. A couple of extra leaders is good. If you’re tying and re-tying and chewing through your leader in one outing…
A: You’re not fishing, you’re spending all your time sitting on the bank tying knots and…
B: Maybe fly fishing isn’t for you.
And if you can follow this wisdom you can catch 98% of the fish for about 2% of the cost. All the additional junk might be fun but, in the end, it rarely matters that much.
